What Is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning?
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) incorporate horses into the human therapeutic or learning process in a hands on, experiential environment. It is a collaborative process between clients, facilitators and horses.
Each session is facilitated by a two person team consisting of a mental health specialist (MH) and an equine specialist (ES). During a session, clients learn about themselves and others by developing relationships and participating in activities with horses, and processing any feelings, patterns or behaviors.
The focus of EAP/EAL is not riding or horsemanship. All horse activities take place “on the ground.” Why? In this work, the horses are able to be themselves and not have to act a certain way, just like our clients can.
This is a space to explore, be ourselves, and build relationships on equal footing.
